What does your husband do...

italy / italian / culture / humor / way — tuscany spaAnne-Marie and I had occasion to visit a very nice spa located in Tuscany (but only 30 minutes from Città della Pieve). This place is prohibitively expensive (at least for us) but there was this last minute deal on the Internet so we decided to go. As a side note, whenever we're in public as a couple (without the children) people think I'm much younger (i.e., at least I don't have to hear "Is she your daughter or your wife?").

So here we are at this wonderful spa and I'm swimming in the private out-door pool (reserved for those staying at the spa as opposed to those who come to receive treatments), and I notice this somewhat younger Italian woman with three kids... THREE KIDS! I had never seen an Italian family with more than two kids so my curiosity took over and I struck up a conversation with the woman. I told her that I hadn't seen an Italian family with three children and she explained that 50 years ago Italian families were much larger. So, I asked "What does your husband do for a living?" and she replied, "He's a director of Italian TV and Cinema." I thought that was pretty cool. We talked off and on for some time and then she and her children left the pool. No sooner had they disappeared from sight that someone else asked me, "Do you know who that is?" I responded truthfully, "I have no idea. Why do you ask?" He then told me that she was one of the most famous actresses in Italy... and here I was asking, "What does your husband do for a living?"
