Is today a holiday?...

What day is it anyway? It seemed that just about every day in Italy was a holiday of some kind or another (national, regional, local, religious, etc.) Not being Italian, we didn't really know when the holidays were and many times what they were about. I remember one day we were having lunch when this commotion broke out. We looked out the window and there was this long medieval procession going by so I took this video. (I guess that's one way to find out it's a holiday.)

It was worse when it came to the famed Italian sciopero (a strike or work stoppage). It can be very problematic if you're traveling by train and all of a sudden the trains stop and there's no more trains. There were "strikes" of all kinds (some lasting longer than others). My favorite was the garbage strike in Napoli that lasted for months. There was garbage piled up on both sides of every street over the entire region. The people just kept dumping and dumping and dumping their garbage and no one came to pick it up. There was trash everywhere!
