The worst pizza I ever ate...
It was in the heart of Tuscany... Firenze (or Florence) right near the famed Duomo (which means dome). The ambiance was just what you'd want (e.g., a few tables outside, charming interior, a tasty-looking menu). When the pizza arrived, the crust was a prefab cracker with some sauce out of a bottle and a few pieces of salami (pepperoni in America). It was so disgusting that I couldn't finish it. The truly sad thing is that it doesn't matter how bad the food was, this place will always have customers. It's got the three keys to restaurant success: location, location, and location. Here's my two cents on the matter... the closer one is to a famous Italian landmark, the more difficult it is to find good food (where the locals would eat). Many times the hotel people are paid referral fees so getting their recommendation may not be helpful. So, what do you do? Either get a travel book (we liked Rick Steves' Italy books here) or ask for a place where locals eat (and make sure there are locals eating before you sit down). You can always say, "dove si mangia bene e non si paga troppo" which means "where you eat well and don't pay too much."
