Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

italy / italian / art / culture — cortona modern artYou're meandering through a medieval city soaking up centuries of history and Italian culture. As you approach the town square your eyes are inexplicably drawn to something that doesn't quite fit... modern art! You'd expect to see historic sculptures or nothing at all... but a gigantic piece of watermelon?

I actually liked this one in Cortona (the city from both the book and movie Under the Tuscan Sun). There were others though; sizable works indicative of yet another artist having conned someone into paying him to erect an eyesore). Right outside the train station in Spoleto, for example, there's this metal monstrosity that I could never quite figure out. I asked about its meaning to many but no one knew. Maybe it was left over from the war.
