Those crazy tourists...

italy / italian / travel — touristsWe went to see Ancona (a popular port on the Adriatic sea). Down near the docks there were these Roman ruins (including the original arch that people would pass under to exit the dock area and enter the city). Before I knew it, Craig had climbed onto the base of the arch and was calling for me to take a picture. Now, I'm sure that the Italians don't want tourists (or anyone else for that matter) climbing onto their historic sites so that someone can snap a picture. The base was solid, there was no sign posted, there was no gate to discourage... still, I felt fortunate that no one else was around to see this.

Sometimes tourists do stupid things and this was one of the few times that I felt like a tourist in Italy. Tourists have expectations that are many times beyond the understanding (or appreciation) of those who desire to serve them. How do you keep yourself from being one of these ugly tourists? Just behave like you're a guest in someone else's house (it doesn't matter that you're paying) and you'll be alright.
